Water security is the capacity of a population to safeguard sustainable access to adequate quantities of acceptable quality water for sustaining livelihoods, human well-being, and socio-economic development, for ensuring protection against water-borne pollution and water-related disasters, and for preserving ecosystems in a climate of peace and political stability.
Every year more than one million people die due to a lack of access to clean water and inadequate sanitation. Most of the world’s rivers are not suitable for direct human use.
This imposes large costs on animals and plants, and also on the millions of people that depend on streams and rivers for their water needs.
THE GENEVA ACTIONS ON HUMAN WATER SECURITY
The world needs coordinated, prioritised and funded actions to provide basic water needs, respond to the deterioration of watersheds and aquifers, and correct failures in water governance.
The time for a dedicated allocation of money and resources, the Global Human Water Security Fund, is now.
Enter your details below to join us in becoming a signatory to the Geneva Actions on Human Water Security. We will make sure you are kept up to date on any developments made towards achieving these goals.
As a signatory, we ask that you please commit to at least one individual action to support our common water future. This act could simply be becoming better informed about water facts (see http://www.unwater.org/water-facts/) or it might be letting others know about the world’s water needs. You could also consider writing to your elected representatives to ask for their support in delivering on the Geneva Actions on Human Water Security.
Whatever you decide to do in terms of your personal commitment, please join us and be part of global group dedicated to delivering a more secure water future for all.
As water researchers and practitioners - and as individuals - we have come from around the world and chosen to act together to change ‘business as usual’ in how we access, use, and reuse water. Collectively, we have committed ourselves to prioritise local and global actions and to focus on water solutions.
